
Bathroom 20-Amp Branch Circuit Requirements seem straightforward until you start asking what else can be connected to them. That’s where the confusion usually begins.
One electrician says, “Every bathroom needs its own 20-amp circuit.” Another says, “You can put the lights on that circuit too.” Then someone else insists, “No, the lights have to be on a separate circuit.”
The problem is that many people stop reading before they get to the exception.
Section 210.11(C)(3) establishes a general rule, then immediately provides an exception. Understanding when that exception applies is the key to wiring bathroom branch circuits correctly.
Bathroom 20-Amp Branch Circuit Requirements in NEC 210.11(C)(3)
This discussion is based on NEC 210.11(C)(3). The bathroom branch circuit requirements are substantively the same in both the 2020 and 2023 NEC. The only difference is a renumbered cross-reference in the exception due to the reorganization of Section 210.23. The requirements discussed here apply to both code cycles.
Section 210.11(C)(3) requires one or more 120-volt, 20-ampere branch circuits to supply the bathroom receptacle outlet(s) required by Section 210.52(D).
The question is not whether a 20-amp circuit is required. It is.
The question is what else, if anything, that circuit is permitted to supply.

The General Rule
Before reading the exception, the rule is straightforward.
The required 20-amp bathroom branch circuit supplies the required bathroom receptacle outlet(s).
“Such circuits shall have no other outlets.”
— NEC 210.11(C)(3)
That one sentence establishes the general rule for this section. If you stopped reading here, you would conclude that the required bathroom branch circuit cannot supply lighting, exhaust fans, or any other outlets.
But don’t stop reading.
The very next sentence is an exception, and whether that exception applies determines the correct answer.
The Exception
Immediately following the general rule, the NEC provides an exception.
The exception states:
Exception: Where the 20-ampere circuit supplies a single bathroom, outlets for other equipment within the same bathroom shall be permitted to be supplied in accordance with 210.23(B)(1) and (B)(2).
Let’s break that down.
The exception contains two conditions that must both be satisfied.
Condition 1
“…the 20-ampere circuit supplies a single bathroom…”
This is the trigger.
If the branch circuit supplies more than one bathroom, the exception does not apply.
That’s the end of the analysis.
You simply return to the general rule that the circuit “shall have no other outlets.”
Condition 2
If the circuit supplies only a single bathroom, the NEC permits outlets for other equipment within the same bathroom.
Notice what the Code does not say.
It does not say you may supply outlets elsewhere in the dwelling.
It does not say you may extend that circuit into another bathroom.
It says:
“…within the same bathroom.”
That limitation is just as important as the permission itself.
In practical terms, those additional outlets commonly include:
- Lighting outlets
- Exhaust fan outlets
- Similar bathroom equipment
because they are outlets for other equipment located within the same bathroom, as permitted by the exception.
What Happens When the Circuit Serves Multiple Bathrooms?
This is where many installations get misunderstood.
The NEC permits one 20-amp branch circuit to supply the required bathroom receptacle outlet(s) in more than one bathroom.
However, once the circuit serves multiple bathrooms, the exception no longer applies.
That means you return to the general rule:
“Such circuits shall have no other outlets.”
As a result, the circuit may supply the required bathroom receptacle outlet(s) in multiple bathrooms, but it may not also supply:
- Lighting outlets
- Exhaust fan outlets
- Other bathroom equipment
Those loads must be supplied by another branch circuit.
Does Every Bathroom Need Its Own 20-Amp Circuit?
No.
This is another common misconception.
Section 210.11(C)(3) does not require an individual 20-amp branch circuit for every bathroom.
Instead, it requires one or more 120-volt, 20-amp branch circuits that comply with the limitations of the section.
One compliant design is a separate 20-amp branch circuit serving a single bathroom.
Another compliant design is one 20-amp branch circuit supplying the required receptacle outlet(s) in multiple bathrooms.
The key is understanding which limitations apply to each design.
Is There a Maximum Number of Bathrooms?
Section 210.11(C)(3) does not establish a maximum number of bathrooms that may share a compliant bathroom receptacle branch circuit.
Other design considerations, such as calculated load or voltage drop, may influence the installation, but that numerical limit is not found in this section.
Field Summary
If the circuit serves one bathroom only, the exception may be used.
The 20-amp branch circuit may supply:
- Required bathroom receptacle outlet(s)
- Lighting outlets
- Exhaust fan outlets
- Other equipment within that same bathroom
If the circuit serves multiple bathrooms, the exception does not apply.
The circuit is limited to supplying the required bathroom receptacle outlet(s).
Local Amendments Still Matter
The NEC establishes the minimum requirements.
Some jurisdictions adopt local amendments that are more restrictive than the NEC.
Always verify the requirements adopted by your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) before applying these provisions to a project.
Bottom Line
The confusion surrounding bathroom branch circuits usually comes from reading only part of Section 210.11(C)(3).
The general rule is that the required 20-amp bathroom branch circuit shall have no other outlets.
Only after determining that the circuit serves a single bathroom can the exception be applied to permit outlets for other equipment within that same bathroom.
Like many NEC requirements, the answer isn’t found by reading one sentence in isolation. It’s found by reading the complete section—including the exception—and applying it exactly as written.
Start with the general rule. Then determine whether the exception applies. That simple approach will lead you to the correct answer every time you analyze Section 210.11(C)(3).
